Mikellid

Mikellid, in English usually Mikellids, is an ancient Greek ethnonym used in classical literature to designate a people of the Peloponnese. The Greek form Mikellidai is encountered in various sources, and the term is Latinized as Mikellidae in modern scholarship. Because the surviving evidence is fragmentary and the ancient authors differ in their accounts, the precise geographic and political identity of the Mikellids remains unclear and debated among scholars.

In literary contexts, the Mikellids appear as one of several ethnic or tribal groups within the broader Achaean world, often listed alongside neighboring communities in the Peloponnese. Some editors treat Mikellids as a distinct local tribe, while others interpret the name as referring to a broader population or to a dynastic lineage rather than a fixed territorial unit. The lack of a single, coherent description in a contemporary, continuous source makes their exact role in ancient politics difficult to determine.

There is no archaeological culture unequivocally identified with the Mikellids.
