Middelreliëf

Middelreliëf is a term used in art history and archaeology to describe a sculptural technique where the projection of figures or elements from the background is moderate. This contrasts with haut-reliëf (high relief) where the projection is significant, and bas-relief (low relief) where the projection is shallow. In middelreliëf, the figures are carved to a degree that they are clearly three-dimensional and project noticeably, but they do not detach entirely from the background or possess extremely deep undercutting. The depth of the carving is sufficient to create a sense of volume and shadow, allowing for a detailed representation of form and texture.

This technique allows for a balance between detail and the integration of the sculpted elements with their surrounding plane. It is often employed to depict narrative scenes or individual figures where a moderate level of projection is desired for clarity and aesthetic effect. Examples can be found in various historical periods and cultures, often used for decorative or commemorative purposes on architectural elements, sarcophagi, or plaques.
