Microtyping

Microtyping refers to a specialized laboratory technique used for the rapid identification and differentiation of microorganisms. It is a molecular biology method that relies on analyzing the unique genetic or biochemical characteristics of bacteria or other microbes. The core principle involves identifying specific patterns of DNA sequences or protein profiles that are characteristic of a particular microbial species or strain. This allows for a much faster and more precise identification than traditional culture-based methods, which can take days or even weeks to yield results.

The process typically involves obtaining a sample containing the microorganisms, extracting their genetic material or relevant proteins, and then subjecting these to specific analytical procedures. These procedures might include polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to amplify specific DNA regions, followed by gel electrophoresis to separate fragments of varying sizes, or mass spectrometry to analyze protein masses.
