Microguilds

Microguilds are a concept used in online gaming, particularly in massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs), to describe small, informal groups of players who band together for specific purposes. Unlike traditional guilds which often have formal structures, leadership, and broad membership, microguilds are typically much smaller, sometimes consisting of only a few friends or even just a duo. Their primary focus is usually on achieving a particular goal, such as completing a specific raid, leveling up a particular skill, or engaging in a shared activity like player-versus-player combat.

The appeal of microguilds lies in their flexibility and low commitment. They allow players to form synergistic groups for immediate tasks without the burden of managing a larger organization. Members of a microguild might not even be formal members of a larger, established guild. This allows for efficient coordination for short-term objectives while still enabling players to participate in the broader social and organizational structures of the game if they choose. The term emphasizes the transient and task-oriented nature of these small player groupings.
