MiG25PU
The MiG-25PU is a two-seat trainer variant of the Soviet Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-25 'Foxbat' interceptor aircraft. It was developed to facilitate pilot training for the high-speed, high-altitude interceptor. The PU designation signifies a "Pilotage" or trainer version. Externally, the MiG-25PU resembles the single-seat variants, but it features a lengthened nose section to accommodate the second cockpit, positioned tandem behind the instructor's seat. This modification significantly altered the aircraft's internal volume and aerodynamics compared to the combat versions. The rear cockpit is equipped with a periscope for the instructor to observe the student pilot. While designed for training, the MiG-25PU retained a significant portion of the performance capabilities of its combat counterparts, allowing trainees to experience the aircraft's extreme speed and altitude envelopes. Armament was typically removed or simplified for training purposes, focusing on familiarization with flight characteristics rather than combat roles. The MiG-25PU was operated by the Soviet Air Force and various export customers, playing a crucial role in qualifying pilots for the formidable MiG-25 interceptor fleet. Its operational life coincided with the later years of the MiG-25's service, before its eventual replacement by newer generation aircraft.
