Metroods

Metroods is a term used in speculative transit design to describe autonomous, modular passenger pods intended for rapid transport within metropolitan rail networks. The name blends metro with pods, signaling a compact, self-contained vehicle optimized for integration with existing metro systems.

Design features include a four-to-six-seat interior, modular seating and cargo areas, swappable interior modules to reconfigure for commuters or freight, and propulsion based on battery-electric power with optional hydrogen fuel cells. Vehicles are guided by fixed rails or enclosed guideways and employ automated train control for precise stopping, platform-level boarding, and coordinated dwell times. Networking with central control allows dynamic routing and flexible formation into trains of varying length.

Operation and deployment: Metroods would operate in dedicated corridors within a city, providing rapid shuttles, feeders, or on-demand trips. They would run at high frequency with automated safety systems, dock in standard hubs, and recharge at depots or hubs via fast charging. The system could reuse existing stations or require new platforms designed for compact vehicles.

Advantages and challenges: Proponents cite potential reductions in crowding, shorter trip times, improved last-mile connectivity, and energy efficiency through lightweight vehicles. Challenges include safety and security for autonomous pods, interoperability with legacy rolling stock, high upfront capital costs, maintenance of modular interiors, and regulatory approval.
