Metning

Metning is a term used in Norwegian, Danish and other Scandinavian languages to denote the state of being fully saturated or filled, i.e., at capacity. In scientific and technical contexts it describes a condition in which a system cannot take in more content or respond further under the given conditions.

In chemistry, a saturated solution contains the maximum amount of dissolved solute for a specific temperature and pressure; any additional solute remains undissolved. In physics and materials science, magnetic saturation occurs when a magnetic material reaches its maximum magnetization and increases in external field produce little or no further change. In electronics, saturation refers to the region where an amplifier or transistor cannot increase its output despite higher input, causing signal clipping.

In hydrology and soil science, saturation describes pore spaces that are fully filled with water, influencing drainage, infiltration, and groundwater flow. In meteorology, saturation is used for concepts such as saturation vapor pressure and relative humidity, describing conditions where air holds as much water vapor as possible at a given temperature.

In economics and marketing, market saturation denotes a situation in which product demand is effectively fulfilled and growth prospects diminish because most potential customers already own the product. In color science and photography, saturation refers to the intensity or vividness of colors; highly saturated colors are bright and pure, while lower saturation yields duller hues.

The core idea across contexts is a limit beyond which further change becomes difficult or impossible under existing conditions: the system is full, and additional input does not produce a proportional increase in output or effect.
