Metilacetát

Metilacetát, also known as methyl acetate, is an ester with the chemical formula CH3COOCH3. It is a colorless liquid with a pleasant, fruity odor. It is readily soluble in water and most organic solvents, making it a versatile solvent in various industrial applications.

Industrially, metilacetát is produced through the esterification of acetic acid with methanol. This reaction typically occurs in the presence of an acid catalyst. It is also a byproduct of some chemical processes.

Metilacetát finds significant use as a solvent for nitrocellulose, lacquers, and paints. Its relatively low boiling point and good solvency power make it suitable for these applications. It is also employed in the production of adhesives, inks, and as a denaturant for ethanol. In the fragrance and flavor industry, it is used as a component in artificial fruit essences due to its characteristic fruity aroma.

The compound is considered to have low toxicity, but inhalation of high concentrations of vapor can cause irritation to the respiratory tract and central nervous system effects. As with most organic solvents, proper ventilation and handling precautions are recommended. Metilacetát is flammable and should be stored away from ignition sources. Its environmental impact is generally considered moderate, with biodegradation occurring in soil and water.
