Methylsilane

Methylsilane is an organosilicon compound with the formula CH3SiH3. It is the methyl-substituted analogue of silane (SiH4) and belongs to the class of alkylsilanes. In standard conditions it is a colorless, volatile substance that is highly reactive toward air and moisture and is typically handled under inert atmosphere.

In research and industry, methylsilane is used chiefly as a reactive precursor for silicon-containing materials, for example in chemical vapor deposition (CVD) processes to deposit silicon-containing films, and as a hydrosilylation reagent in organic synthesis to introduce silicon-containing groups.

Preparation and handling of methylsilane rely on general methods used for alkylsilane synthesis. It can be prepared via hydrosilylation routes or by reduction or alkylation of chloromethylsilane derivatives. Because of its reactivity, it is usually stored and used under inert gas and at controlled temperatures to minimize loss and decomposition.

Reactions of methylsilane involve the Si–H bonds, which readily participate in hydrolysis, oxidation, and hydrosilylation. Hydrolysis can yield silanol and siloxane species, while hydrosilylation enables formation of organosilicon bonds to alkenes and alkynes. As a silane derivative, methylsilane is flammable and can form hazardous mixtures with air; proper engineering controls, ventilation, and avoidance of oxidizers are required for safe handling.
