The term combines meta- (beyond, about) with technical, signaling a reflexive stance toward technology as a social and organizational artifact.

Within scholarly and policy contexts, metatechnical perspectives examine governance, ethics, risk, standardization, and interoperability, rather than focusing solely on performance metrics.
