Metaphoricalpaired is a label used in some linguistic and literary discussions to describe a rhetorical device in which two metaphorical expressions are paired to articulate a single concept, mood, or argument. The term is not standardized across fields, but it is useful for analyzing how dual imagery shapes meaning.

The device commonly presents two metaphor frames that are parallel or in deliberate contrast. They may appear in a single clause or across adjacent lines, connected by coordination or balancing syntax. Metaphoricalpaired relies on cross-domain mappings—such as nature and agency, or motion and emotion—to produce a richer or more nuanced image than a single metaphor could deliver.

Examples include: "a storm of doubt and a harbor of resolve," which juxtaposes volatile uncertainty with stabilizing determination; and "a river of memory flowing through a canyon of forgetfulness," pairing fluid recall with a narrowing lapse.

In practice, the device can heighten emphasis, illuminate conflict, or contrast perspectives. It is commonly found in poetry, rhetoric, and literary analysis, as well as in discourse analysis and cognitive linguistics. Critics caution that overuse or opaque pairings may confuse readers rather than clarify meaning.
