Metamoderation is the practice of supervising and shaping moderation activities across an online community, focusing on how moderators apply rules, handle disputes, and enforce policies. It aims to balance effective enforcement with fairness and transparency.

Core components include governance mechanisms (such as moderator councils or elected representatives), review procedures for moderator actions, transparency through public moderation logs and decision rationales, and formal appeal or escalation paths. It also encompasses conflict-of-interest policies, training, and standard operating procedures.

Common implementations include a separate meta-discussion space where users can question moderator decisions, scheduled audits of moderation outcomes, and mechanisms to appeal moderator actions to a higher authority or community body.
