Metallising

Metallising is a thermal spray process used to apply a metallic coating to a surface. The process involves melting a metallic feedstock, typically wire or powder, and then projecting the molten or semi-molten particles onto the substrate. This creates a dense, strongly bonded coating that can improve the surface properties of the underlying material.

There are several common methods of metallising, including flame spraying, arc spraying, and plasma spraying. Flame spraying uses a combustion flame to melt the feedstock, while arc spraying uses an electric arc between two consumable electrodes. Plasma spraying uses a high-temperature plasma jet to melt and propel the particles. The choice of method depends on the type of metal being applied, the substrate material, and the desired coating properties.

Metallised coatings are used for a wide range of applications. They can provide corrosion resistance, wear resistance, electrical conductivity, and decorative finishes. For example, metallising is often used to protect steel structures from rust and corrosion, to build up worn machine parts, and to create conductive pathways on non-conductive substrates. The coating thickness can be precisely controlled, allowing for tailored performance. The process is versatile and can be applied to a variety of materials, including metals, ceramics, and plastics, although careful surface preparation is often required for optimal adhesion.
