Metallikeräys

Metallikeräys, a Finnish term translating to "metal collection" or "metal recycling," refers to the process of gathering and processing discarded metal materials for reuse. This practice is a crucial component of waste management and resource conservation in Finland and many other countries. The primary goal of metallikeräys is to divert metal waste from landfills and incinerators, thereby reducing the need for virgin metal extraction, which is often energy-intensive and environmentally damaging.

The types of metals collected through metallikeräys are diverse, encompassing ferrous metals like steel and iron, as well as non-ferrous metals such as aluminum, copper, brass, and lead. Consumers and businesses contribute to metallikeräys by separating metal items from their general waste. This can include everyday objects like tin cans, aluminum foil, old appliances, scrap car parts, and construction debris. Collection points are readily available, including designated recycling bins, drop-off centers, and specialized recycling facilities.

Once collected, the metal waste undergoes sorting to separate different metal types. This is often done through a combination of manual labor and automated processes, including magnetic separation for ferrous metals. The sorted metals are then typically baled or crushed before being sent to smelters and reprocessing plants. At these facilities, the metals are melted down and purified to create new raw materials, which are then used in the manufacturing of a wide array of new products, from vehicles and construction materials to electronics and household goods. Metallikeräys significantly reduces energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions compared to producing metals from ore.
