Metallcylinder

Metallcylinder, a term sometimes used for a metal cylinder, denotes a cylindrical metal component with a circular cross-section and parallel end faces. It can be solid or hollow, and its geometry is defined by outer diameter, inner diameter (for hollow forms), and length.

There are solid and hollow forms. Hollow cylinders, often referred to as tubes or sleeves, have an inner bore and a wall of specified thickness. The choice between solid and hollow depends on strength, weight, pressure containment, and intended function in a mechanism or structure.

Materials and properties vary with application. Common metals include steel and stainless steel for strength and durability, aluminum for light weight, and copper or brass for corrosion resistance and machinability. Titanium and nickel-based alloys are used when high strength-to-weight or high-temperature performance is required. Material selection also considers wear resistance, fatigue life, and corrosion resistance.

Manufacturing methods span several approaches. Solid cylinders are frequently produced by turning or boring on lathes, and by extrusion or forging for specific alloys. Hollow cylinders are often formed through seamless extrusion or rolling, followed by drilling or boring to reach precise inner diameters. Finishing operations may include heat treatment, grinding, honing, and surface coating to meet tolerances and surface quality.

Common applications include machine elements such as shafts, bushings, and sleeves, hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders, engine and compressor cylinders, rollers, and structural supports. The term encompasses a broad class of cylindrical metal parts used across engineering, manufacturing, and construction. Standards and tolerances are defined by industry and application requirements.
