It emphasizes the metal atom or cluster responsible for the primary electronic structure and chemical reactivity, in distinction from surrounding ligands or frameworks. The concept is applied to a range of systems where a discrete metal center governs catalytic activity, redox processes, or magnetic properties.

Metallcentra can be mononuclear, containing a single metal ion, or multinuclear, forming clusters or nodes in networks such as metal‑organic frameworks or coordination polymers.
