Metacommentaar

Metacommentaar refers to discourse that comments on the commentary itself, or on the way a text is made, interpreted, and received. It is a form of metadiscourse that situates the act of communication within the message, often addressing questions of purpose, reliability, and audience. In practice, metacommentaar can be explicit, with the author directly explaining motives, methods, or limits, or implicit, conveyed through structuring choices, framing, or self-referential cues.

The phenomenon appears across genres and media, including journalism, literature, film criticism, academic writing, and online commentaries. It may take the form of a stated disclaimer, a metalinguistic note about bias, a preface that explains how sources were selected, or a narrative moment that acknowledges potential reader reactions. The effect is to frame interpretation and to reveal the constructed nature of the discourse.

Metacommentaar serves several functions. It can guide readers toward a particular interpretation, establish trust by being transparent about methods, and negotiate authorial authority and accountability.
