Messners

Messners is a surname of German-language origin. It is borne by several individuals, among them Reinhold Messner, a renowned mountaineer and author, and Günther Messner, his younger brother.

Reinhold Messner (born 1944) is an Italian mountaineer, explorer, and writer who has been widely regarded as one of the greatest climbers of all time. He was the first person to ascend all fourteen independent eight-thousand-meter peaks. In 1978, he and Peter Habeler completed the first ascent of Everest without supplemental oxygen. In 1980, he made the first solo ascent of Mount Everest, also without oxygen. He has published numerous books on mountaineering and culture, and founded the Messner Mountain Museum, a network dedicated to mountain history and culture.

Günther Messner (1946–1970), Reinhold's younger brother, accompanied him on several expeditions and died during a 1970 attempt on Nanga Parbat.

Beyond these figures, other individuals with the Messner surname have pursued careers in various fields such as sports, academia, and the arts. The name is also associated with the Messner Mountain Museum, a cultural initiative connected to Reinhold Messner that documents mountain life and history.
