Mesoporeiksi

Mesoporeiksi is a term that refers to porous materials with pore sizes ranging from 2 to 50 nanometers in diameter. These materials occupy a significant intermediate space between microporous materials (pores less than 2 nm) and macroporous materials (pores greater than 50 nm). The mesoporous structure is characterized by its well-defined pore size, large surface area, and tunable pore volume, making it highly valuable in various scientific and industrial applications.

The synthesis of mesoporous materials often involves the use of templating agents, such as surfactants or block copolymers, which self-assemble into ordered structures. These structures then serve as scaffolds around which inorganic precursors can condense. After the formation of the inorganic framework, the organic template is removed, typically through calcination or solvent extraction, leaving behind a porous solid with a network of interconnected mesopores. Common examples of mesoporous materials include mesoporous silica (e.g., MCM-41, SBA-15) and mesoporous carbons.

The unique properties of mesoporous materials, such as their high surface area and controlled pore size distribution, make them ideal for applications in catalysis, adsorption, drug delivery, and sensing. In catalysis, the large surface area provides ample sites for chemical reactions, while the mesopores facilitate the diffusion of reactants and products. For adsorption, mesoporous materials can efficiently capture and store gases or molecules due to their internal void space. In drug delivery, their porous structure can encapsulate therapeutic agents, allowing for controlled release over time. The ability to tailor the pore size and surface chemistry of mesoporous materials further expands their potential in diverse fields.
