Mesblokken

Mesblokken are storage blocks for kitchen knives, designed to protect blades and keep them accessible. They are typically placed on a countertop or integrated into a workstation, and consist of a solid block with a set of slots or channels for knives of various sizes. The term can also refer to magnetic knife blocks that use metal strips rather than slots.

Most mesblokken are made from wood (such as beech, maple, oak, or bamboo), but models in plastic or stainless steel are common as well. Wooden blocks are appreciated for blade protection and aesthetics, while plastic and metal variants are easier to clean and more durable in humid kitchens. Capacity ranges from a few essential blades to a dozen or more slots.

Usage options include traditional vertical blocks with multiple slots, long blocks for chef's knives, and compact blocks for paring and utility knives. Some products incorporate built-in honing steels or sharpeners. To maximize blade life, store knives dry, hand-wash the block, and avoid soaking wooden blocks; oil wooden blocks occasionally to prevent cracking.

Safety considerations include placing blocks away from the edge of the counter to avoid tipping and keeping blades pointed away from the user when removing or returning knives. Magnetic strips offer a space-saving alternative but may be less protective for blades and require secure mounting.
