Merkitysalue

Merkitysalue is a concept in linguistics and semiotics that refers to the semantic field or domain of meaning associated with a word or expression. It describes the set of senses, connotations, and related ideas that a term can evoke in use, beyond its strict denotation. The merkitysalue encompasses core meaning, peripheral senses, metaphorical extensions, and culturally conditioned associations that a speaker may draw on in different contexts.

The merkitysalue is related to, but distinct from, denotation. While denotation concerns the actual referents of a word, the merkitysalue covers the broader network of meanings and semantic relations in which those referents sit. It helps account for polysemy (multiple related senses), synonymy, hypernymy and hyponymy, and how words can shift meaning over time or across domains. In practice, researchers analyze the merkitysalue to understand how words cluster into semantic fields and how context expands or narrows a term’s sense.
