MerconStandards
MerconStandards refers to the family of transmission fluid specifications and related performance requirements established by Ford Motor Company for automatic transmissions, torque converters and some power steering systems. The term covers a sequence of Ford-defined MERCON specifications that set chemical, physical and performance criteria such as friction characteristics, viscosity, thermal stability, anti-wear properties and seal compatibility.
The standards have evolved through multiple generations to address changing transmission designs, emissions targets and fuel-economy
MerconStandards are manufacturer-specific rather than industry-wide specifications. Fluids must meet Ford test protocols to be marketed
The standards influence aftermarket supply, OEM recommendations and repair practices worldwide. Adherence to the correct MERCON
