Mercerisers are a type of textile finishing process that involves the application of a mercerizing agent to cotton fabric. This process is primarily used to improve the fabric's strength, durability, and luster. The mercerizing agent is typically sodium hydroxide, which is applied to the cotton under high pressure and temperature. The process causes the cotton fibers to swell and then shrink, resulting in a more compact and stronger fabric. This treatment also enhances the fabric's ability to absorb and retain dyes, making it easier to achieve vibrant and long-lasting colors. Mercerized cotton is commonly used in the production of denim jeans, as well as other garments and home textiles. The process was developed in the 19th century by Sir John Mercer, a British chemist, and has since become an essential technique in the textile industry.
