Membránfrakciók, or membrane fractions, are isolated portions of cellular membranes obtained through biochemical techniques. These fractions are crucial for studying the specific functions and molecular compositions of different membrane systems within a cell, such as the plasma membrane, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, mitochondria, or nucleus.

The process typically begins with cell lysis, where cells are broken open to release their contents. This is often achieved through mechanical methods like homogenization or sonication, or by osmotic shock. Following lysis, differential centrifugation is employed. This technique separates cellular components based on their size and density. By varying the speed and duration of centrifugation, different membrane fractions can be pelleted at different stages, allowing for their separation from other cellular components like cytosol, nuclei, or intact organelles.

Further purification steps, such as density gradient centrifugation or chromatography, may be used to enrich specific membrane types or to isolate particular protein complexes within a membrane fraction. The purity and composition of these fractions are then assessed using biochemical markers, enzyme assays, or by analyzing their protein and lipid content through techniques like SDS-PAGE or mass spectrometry.

Studying membrane fractions allows researchers to investigate membrane-bound enzymes, receptors, transport proteins, and signaling molecules in a more defined and manageable system, contributing to a deeper understanding of cellular processes and disease mechanisms.
