Membraanisäiliö, also known as a diaphragm tank, is a type of pressure vessel used to store fluids. Its primary distinguishing feature is the internal flexible diaphragm, typically made of rubber or synthetic material, that separates the fluid from a compressible gas, usually air or nitrogen. This separation is crucial for maintaining system pressure and preventing direct contact between the fluid and the gas.

The diaphragm tank functions by utilizing the compressibility of the gas. When fluid is pumped into the tank, it pushes against the diaphragm, compressing the gas on the other side. This compression increases the gas pressure, which in turn opposes the incoming fluid pressure and helps to maintain a relatively stable system pressure. Conversely, when fluid is drawn out of the tank, the compressed gas expands, pushing the diaphragm back and maintaining pressure.

Membraanisäiliöitä are commonly employed in various applications, including domestic water supply systems, heating and cooling systems, and industrial processes. They serve multiple purposes, such as absorbing pressure fluctuations caused by pumps, providing a reserve of water, and preventing water hammer. The diaphragm's presence also helps to prevent corrosion of the tank's interior by separating the stored fluid from the air. Regular inspection and maintenance of the diaphragm are important to ensure the continued effective operation of the tank.
