Melman

Melman is a fictional giraffe in the Madagascar animated film series produced by DreamWorks Animation. The character is voiced by David Schwimmer and first appears in the 2005 feature Madagascar as one of four Central Park Zoo animals who end up stranded on the island of Madagascar. Melman is depicted as neurotic, hypochondriacal, and excessively cautious, with a keen interest in medicine and anatomy. He often acts as the self-described medical expert of the group, frequently worrying about diseases, health procedures, and worst‑case scenarios, while remaining loyal to his friends.

Across the series, Melman accompanies Alex the lion, Marty the zebra, and Gloria the hippo on various adventures, contributing to the comedy and group dynamics with his anxiety-driven antics and occasional practical insight. In Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa (2008), the ensemble travels to Africa and encounters new environments and challenges. In Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted (2012), Melman remains part of the troupe as the animals join a traveling circus, continuing to provide comic relief and support for the group.

Voice actor David Schwimmer’s portrayal helped establish the character’s distinctive blend of neurosis and good intentions, and Melman has appeared in related media such as video games and merchandise.
