Mellomstemme

Mellomstemme is a term used in choral music, particularly in Scandinavian contexts, to describe the middle voice or inner voices within a polyphonic texture. It denotes the parts that sit between the melody in the soprano and the foundation in the bass. In a typical four-part choir (SATB), mellomstemme covers the alto and tenor lines; in mixed ensembles it refers to any inner voice that provides harmony and counterpoint rather than the main melodic line.

The mellomstemme serves several musical functions. It supports harmonic progression, creates inner motion that enriches the texture, and facilitates contrapuntal interaction between voices. In pedagogy, the concept helps singers develop balance, blend, intonation, and a degree of independence appropriate to inner parts. Singers assigned to the mellomstemme often carry less weight in tone than the soprano but must manage a more intricate or independent line than the bass.

Notationally, inner voices may move with more flexibility to realize chords and proper voice leading. In larger works, the mellomstemme can be subdivided into two parallel lines; in smaller pieces, it may be treated as a single line that still functions harmonically between outer voices.

History and usage: The term reflects conventions of four-part vocal writing and is common in choral pedagogy in Scandinavia. In English-language musicology, the concept is often described as inner voice or middle voice, with the specific assignment to alto or tenor depending on the arrangement of voices in a choir.
