Mellomforms

Mellomforms is a term used in linguistics to describe intermediate or transitional forms that appear between a language’s established categories during processes of change or variation. The concept is often invoked to capture data points that are not fully aligned with a current canonical form but also do not belong to an older, clearly attested state. In this sense, mellomforms reflect the dynamics of language, showing how forms move along a continuum from one category to another.

The word mellomform derives from the Scandinavian roots for middle or intermediate, and the term is most frequently encountered in studies of historical linguistics, sociolinguistics, and contact linguistics. While not universally adopted, it serves as a convenient label for forms that occupy a position between two well-defined states, such as adjacent inflectional endings, phonetic realizations, or syntactic patterns.
