Melanodonta

Melanodonta is a genus of freshwater mussels, also known as naiads or pearly freshwater mussels. These bivalve mollusks belong to the family Unionidae, a large and diverse group of freshwater mussels found worldwide. The genus Melanodonta is primarily distributed in Asia, with several species found in East Asia and Southeast Asia.

Species within Melanodonta are characterized by their dark-colored shells, hence the genus name, which derives from the Greek words "melas" (black) and "odonta" (tooth), referring to the dark, often somewhat toothed hinge teeth. The shells can vary in shape and size depending on the species and its habitat, but they are generally ovate to elongated. Like other freshwater mussels, Melanodonta species are filter feeders, drawing water into their mantle cavity and extracting organic particles. Their life cycle involves a parasitic larval stage, known as glochidia, which attach to the gills or fins of host fish before developing into free-living mussels.

The ecological role of Melanodonta mussels is significant. They contribute to water clarity by filtering out suspended particles and are an important food source for various aquatic animals. However, like many freshwater mussel populations globally, Melanodonta species can be vulnerable to habitat degradation, pollution, and the introduction of invasive species.
