Mekan

Mekan is a Turkish noun meaning place, location, or space. It can refer to a physical site—a room, building, or city district—and also to a more abstract notion of space or venue, such as a setting for events. The term is common in everyday language as well as in academic and literary Turkish.

Etymology: The word derives from Arabic makān (مَكان), meaning “place” or “location,” and entered Turkish through historical contact with Arabic and Persian. In modern Turkish it is written as mekan, though a diacritic form mekân appears in some dictionaries and in more formal or historical texts.

Usage: In Turkish, mekan appears in a range of expressions. The compound mekânsal describes spatial or space-related aspects, as in mekânsal planlama (spatial planning) or mekânsal analiz (spatial analysis). It is frequently used to indicate physical venues for events, such as konser mekânı or sergi mekânı. In literature and philosophy, mekân is used as a concept, often contrasted with zaman (time) to discuss space–time relations.
