Mehrzonen

Mehrzonen is a term used to describe systems that divide a space or a process into multiple independent zones, each of which can be controlled separately. In building technology, Mehrzonen refers to zoning for heating, cooling or ventilation, enabling different conditions in different parts of a building. The concept can also apply to other domains such as multi-zone audio systems, refrigeration, or cooking appliances that offer several independently controlled zones.

In heating and cooling, Mehrzonen implementations include variable refrigerant flow (VRF/VRV) systems with zone controllers, or central systems equipped with dampers in air ducts and zone valves in hydronic circuits. Each zone usually has its own thermostat or sensor and a means to regulate flow or temperature, with control strategies ranging from simple on/off to more advanced proportional or model-based schemes. Building management systems are often used to coordinate multiple zones.

The main benefits are improved comfort and energy efficiency, since conditioning can be tailored to the occupancy and use of specific areas and energy is not wasted on unoccupied zones. It also enhances load management and peak demand control. Challenges include higher initial installation costs, more complex control and commissioning, and the need for careful balancing, calibration and ongoing maintenance.

Applications span residential homes, offices, schools and healthcare facilities, as well as specialized environments such as data centers or ships. Mehrzonen emphasizes a modular, scalable approach to climate control by partitioning spaces into independent zones with dedicated control.
