Mehrlenkeraufhängung

Mehrlenkeraufhängung, also known as multi-link suspension, is a type of independent suspension system for vehicles. It utilizes a number of individual links to locate the wheel and maintain its orientation relative to the vehicle body. Unlike simpler designs like MacPherson struts, a multi-link setup typically employs at least three or four control arms. These links are strategically positioned and pivot at specific points, allowing for precise control over wheel movement during suspension compression and extension.

The primary advantage of a Mehrlenkeraufhängung is its ability to decouple the wheel's vertical travel from its camber and toe angles. This means that as the suspension moves, the wheel can maintain a more consistent contact patch with the road surface. This improved tire contact leads to better grip, enhanced handling characteristics, and a more comfortable ride. Engineers can tune the geometry of the links to achieve specific handling behaviors, such as reducing body roll during cornering or minimizing brake dive.

Mehrlenkeraufhängung systems are common in modern passenger cars, particularly in the rear suspension of many vehicles, and are also found in performance-oriented front suspensions. While more complex and costly to manufacture than simpler designs, the benefits in terms of ride and handling often justify the increased engineering and production expense. The precise control over wheel geometry contributes significantly to a vehicle's overall stability and driving dynamics.
