Megszentelés

Me gszentelés is a term used in Hungarian to describe the act of setting apart something or someone for sacred use. The word derives from szent, meaning holy, with the prefix meg-, indicating making complete or dedicated. In religious contexts it denotes a formal process by which a person, place, object, or rite is consecrated and thus dedicated to God or a sacred purpose.

In Christian practice, megszentelés can refer to several related acts. First, the consecration of persons, notably ordination, which dedicates an individual to sacred duties and ministry. Second, the consecration of spaces and objects, such as churches, altars, vessels (chalices, patens) and utensils, often involving anointing with chrism, prayers, and the laying on of hands by a bishop. Third, the consecration of the Eucharistic elements, where bread and wine are declared or believed to become the Body and Blood of Christ during the liturgy. The exact theology and practice vary between traditions; in Catholicism the moment is central to the Eucharist, while Orthodox and many Protestant communities understand the act within their own doctrinal frameworks.

Me gszentelés is distinct from general blessings. Blessing (áldás) is a lighter, often temporary act of invocation, whereas megszentelés implies a more solemn dedication with ongoing sacred function. The term can also be used metaphorically to describe dedicating a person, place, or object to a sacred or dedicated purpose.
