MedievaltoBaroque is a term used to describe the transition in Western art and culture from the medieval period to the Baroque era. This transition was not a sudden event but a gradual evolution spanning several centuries, roughly from the late 14th century through the 17th century. It encompasses the Renaissance and Mannerism as key stylistic phases within this broader shift.

The medieval period, characterized by its religious focus and stylized representations, gave way to the Renaissance, which emphasized humanism, realism, and classical ideals. Artists like Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo sought to revive the artistic principles of ancient Greece and Rome, leading to innovations in perspective, anatomy, and composition.

Following the High Renaissance, Mannerism emerged as a style that often exaggerated Renaissance principles, featuring elongated figures, complex compositions, and intense colors. This period served as a bridge to the Baroque.

The Baroque era, beginning around 1600, is known for its drama, grandeur, and emotional intensity. Artists like Caravaggio, Bernini, and Rembrandt employed dynamic movement, strong contrasts of light and shadow (chiaroscuro), and opulent details to evoke awe and passion in the viewer. This stylistic evolution reflects profound changes in European society, including scientific discoveries, religious reformation and counter-reformation, and the rise of powerful monarchies and the Church.
