Matsmältningsvägarna

Matsmältningsvägarna, or the digestive system, is a complex network of organs and structures responsible for the breakdown, absorption, and elimination of food and waste materials in the body. It begins at the mouth, where mechanical digestion starts with chewing and the addition of saliva, which contains enzymes that begin the chemical breakdown of carbohydrates. The food then travels through the esophagus, a muscular tube that transports the bolus to the stomach via peristalsis.

The stomach is a J-shaped organ that mixes and breaks down food further with the aid of gastric juices, including hydrochloric acid and enzymes like pepsin. The partially digested food, now called chyme, is then propelled into the small intestine, the primary site of nutrient absorption. The small intestine is divided into three parts: the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. Here, bile from the gallbladder and enzymes from the pancreas further break down fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. Nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream through the intestinal walls, while undigested material moves into the large intestine.

The large intestine, or colon, absorbs water and electrolytes from the remaining waste material, forming feces. The rectum temporarily stores feces before they are eliminated from the body through the anus during defecation. The digestive system also plays a crucial role in the body's immune system, with the gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT) helping to protect against pathogens. Overall, the digestive system is essential for maintaining overall health and proper nutrient absorption.
