Matsmältningskanalen, also known as the gastrointestinal tract or digestive tract, is a complex system in the body responsible for breaking down food, absorbing nutrients, and eliminating waste. It begins at the mouth and extends to the anus. The process of digestion starts in the mouth with mechanical breakdown through chewing and chemical breakdown by enzymes in saliva. Food then travels down the esophagus to the stomach, where it is mixed with stomach acid and enzymes, further breaking it down into a semi-liquid mixture called chyme.

From the stomach, chyme moves into the small intestine. This is where most nutrient absorption occurs. The small intestine is a long, coiled tube with numerous villi and microvilli that increase its surface area for efficient absorption of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals into the bloodstream. Accessory organs like the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas play crucial roles by producing digestive enzymes and bile, which are released into the small intestine to aid in digestion.

Following the small intestine, the remaining undigested material enters the large intestine. The large intestine absorbs water and electrolytes from the waste material, forming feces. Bacteria in the large intestine also produce certain vitamins, such as vitamin K. Finally, the feces are stored in the rectum before being eliminated from the body through the anus during defecation. The entire process is carefully regulated by hormones and the nervous system to ensure efficient digestion and nutrient absorption.
