Matkustelu

Matkustelu is a Finnish noun describing the activity of travelling, typically informal or leisure-oriented movement between places. The term often refers to short- to medium-length trips, usually within Finland or to nearby countries. It is related to, but distinct from, other travel concepts such as matkailu (tourism), which emphasizes visiting places for enjoyment and learning, and liikematkustus (business travel).

The word is formed from the verb matkustaa and related forms such as matkustella, with a nominal suffix that expresses the activity. In everyday Finnish, matkustelu often implies casual, spontaneous, or leisurely travel rather than formal planning or relocation.

Culturally, matkustelu encompasses weekend road trips, city breaks, nature excursions, visiting friends and family, and short train or bus trips. It contrasts with business travel (liikematkustus) and with broader tourism (matkailu), which can include longer stays or curated experiences.
