Matara

Matara is a major city in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka and serves as the administrative capital of Matara District. It lies on the south coast, at the mouth of the Nilwala River, about 160 kilometers south of Colombo. The city functions as a regional commercial and transportation hub, connected by coastal roads and the rail network.

Historically, Matara has roots in ancient Sri Lankan kingdoms and maritime trade. In the colonial era, the Dutch built the Matara Fort along the coast near the river mouth, creating a distinctive star-shaped fortress that later passed to the British. The fort and surrounding colonial remnants remain prominent landmarks within the city.

Key sights in and around Matara include the Matara Fort and its adjacent Old Dutch Gate, the nearby Paravi Duwa Bird Island, and the Dondra Head Lighthouse lying to the east at the southern tip of Sri Lanka. Polhena Beach is a popular seaside spot known for its calm waters and rock pools, while the Weherahena Temple is a notable Buddhist temple in the region.

Economically, Matara supports fishing, coastal trade, education, and services, with tourism playing a growing role thanks to its beaches, forts, and cultural sites. The city is served by the Southern Transport Corridor, including the coastal railway line and major roads that link it with Galle, Wellawaya, and further districts.
