Matamoros, officially the city of Matamoros, is a city and the municipal seat of Matamoros Municipality in the northeastern Mexican state of Tamaulipas. It lies on the southern bank of the Rio Grande (Río Bravo del Norte), directly opposite Brownsville, Texas. The city is an important border crossing and industrial center in the Mexico–United States border region.

The city was named in honor of Mariano Matamoros, a hero of the Mexican War of Independence.
