Mastergraad

Mastergraad, or master's degree, is a graduate-level academic degree awarded after completing a program that follows a bachelor’s degree. It denotes advanced knowledge in a specific field and typically combines coursework with research or professional work. In Dutch-speaking regions such as the Netherlands and Flanders, the term mastergraad is commonly used, and degrees are issued as Master of Arts (MA), Master of Science (MSc), or other specialized titles like Master of Business Administration (MBA).

Programs usually last one to two years of full-time study and are measured in credits, commonly 60 to 120 ECTS, depending on the country and discipline. Entrance generally requires a bachelor’s degree, and many programs include a master’s thesis or capstone project. Master programs can be research-oriented, preparing students for doctoral study, or professionally oriented, focusing on advanced practice in fields such as engineering, education, healthcare, or business.

Within the European Higher Education Area, the master degree is the second cycle of higher education under the Bologna Process, designed to be compatible across member states. International recognition generally follows established standards and national qualification frameworks, aiding cross-border study and employment.

Holding a mastergraad can expand career opportunities, enable specialization, and provide eligibility for doctoral studies, though requirements vary by country, field, and profession. Some professions require specific master qualifications for licensure or practice.
