Masterformat

MasterFormat is a standard for organizing specifications and other project manuals used in the construction industry. Developed by the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) and Construction Specifications Canada (CSC), it provides a uniform framework for describing products, materials, and systems across a project, facilitating clear communication among architects, engineers, contractors, and owners.

The structure of MasterFormat is built around divisions. The widely used edition divides content into 50 divisions, covering topics from General Requirements and Sitework to Concrete, Masonry, Metals, Wood and Plastics, Thermal and Moisture Protection, Doors and Windows, Finishes, Specialties, Equipment, and the Mechanical and Electrical systems. Each division is further subdivided into sections that specify performance criteria, products, and installation details.

Applications and impact: MasterFormat is used to organize project manuals and specifications, align procurement data, and support cost estimation and project delivery. It is designed to work with other classification systems and data models, including UniFormat for cost and facility information and OmniClass for broader classification. The format is commonly used in North America and is increasingly integrated with digital specification systems and BIM workflows.

Maintenance and editions: CSI and CSC periodically update MasterFormat to reflect changes in construction technology, products, and industry practices. The current widely adopted edition emphasizes practical, serviceable organization of content and is maintained to ensure compatibility with evolving procurement and design processes.
