Massfraktionerna, or mass fractions, refer to the proportion of a particular component within a mixture expressed as a fraction of the total mass. They are dimensionless but often represented as a percentage when multiplied by 100. The mass fraction of component i, denoted c_i, is calculated as c_i = m_i / m_total, where m_i is the mass of the component and m_total is the sum of all component masses in the mixture.

Mass fractions are central to quantitative analysis in chemistry, material science, and engineering. They enable the determination of composition in solutions, alloys, powders, and fuels. Unlike molar fractions, mass fractions use mass values, making them particularly useful for properties that scale with mass, such as density or calorific value.

In practice, mass fractions are used to calculate mixture properties via weighted averages. For example, the density ρ_mix of a binary mixture can be estimated as ρ_mix ≈ (c_1/ρ_1 + c_2/ρ_2)^(−1). Similarly, the specific heat capacity of a blend may be determined by summing the mass‐fraction‐weighted specific heats of the components.

Mass fractions also serve as key variables in thermodynamic calculations. The Gibbs free energy of mixing, phase equilibrium predictions, and kinetic modeling of reactions often depend on accurate mass‐fraction inputs. Because they are basis‑independent, mass fractions are universally comparable across different temperature and pressure conditions when the system is closed.

In educational contexts, the concept of mass fraction is frequently introduced alongside mass balance equations. Students learn to manipulate relationships such as m_total = ∑m_i and c_i = m_i / ∑m_i to solve for unknown composition components, illustrating the practical importance of the concept in both laboratory and industrial settings.
