Mashinostroenie, or machine-building, is the sector of industry that designs, produces, and maintains machinery, equipment, and integrated systems across a wide range of sectors. It encompasses mechanical engineering, the manufacture of machine tools, power equipment, automation and control systems, and specialized machinery for manufacturing and processing.

Typical products include machine tools and metalworking equipment, engines and turbines, transmission systems, electrical machinery, vehicles and locomotives, ship and aerospace equipment, robotics, and industrial automation systems. The field also covers research, development, and after-sales services such as maintenance and modernization.

Historically, mashinostroenie has been central to Russia and the Soviet Union's industrial policy, integrating design institutes, large machine-building plants, and supply chains to accelerate industrialization. It produced both civilian machinery and military hardware, and played a key role in the export of machinery and equipment.

Today, the term remains a broad label for the engineering and manufacturing sector in Russia and several post-Soviet states. The industry faces challenges from global competition, sanctions, and dependence on high-technology components, while seeking to modernize through research and development, localization, and digitalization of production processes (Industry 4.0).

Policy and investment in mashinostroenie aim to strengthen domestic capabilities in machine tools, robotics, automation, and energy equipment, with emphasis on quality standards, skilled labor, and integration with global supply chains.
