Marathis

The Marathi people are an Indo-Aryan ethnolinguistic group who speak the Marathi language. They are predominantly found in the Indian state of Maharashtra. The Marathi language, with its own script, the Devanagari, has a rich literary history dating back centuries. Historically, the Marathas were a prominent martial community, famously establishing the Maratha Empire in the 17th century under the leadership of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, which played a significant role in shaping the political landscape of the Indian subcontinent.

The socio-economic landscape of Maharashtra, the homeland of the Marathis, is characterized by a mix of agricultural and industrial development. Mumbai, the state capital, is a major global financial center and the heart of India's film industry. Pune is another significant city, known for its educational institutions and IT sector.
