Mandlipõletikud, more commonly known as tonsillitis, refers to inflammation of the tonsils, which are two oval-shaped pads of tissue at the back of the throat. These tissues help trap germs that enter your throat.

The most common cause of tonsillitis is a viral infection, such as the common cold or flu. However, bacterial infections, particularly from Streptococcus pyogenes (group A strep), can also cause tonsillitis. Symptoms can vary but often include a sore throat, difficulty swallowing, fever, and swollen tonsils. The tonsils may appear red, swollen, and sometimes have white or yellow patches or streaks of pus. Other symptoms might include a headache, a rash, and swollen lymph nodes in the neck.

Diagnosis is typically made based on a physical examination and a throat swab to identify the cause. Treatment depends on whether the tonsillitis is viral or bacterial. For viral tonsillitis, treatment focuses on managing symptoms with rest, fluids, and pain relievers. Antibiotics are ineffective against viruses. For bacterial tonsillitis, a course of antibiotics is prescribed to kill the bacteria and prevent complications. In some recurrent or severe cases, a tonsillectomy, the surgical removal of the tonsils, may be considered.
