Manand

Manand is a type of traditional Fijian canoe, specifically a large outrigger canoe. These vessels were historically vital for transportation, fishing, and warfare throughout the Fijian archipelago. Manand were typically constructed from dug-out logs, often from large timber trees like the vesi, and fitted with one or more outriggers. The outriggers, known as ama and vakatunuloa, provided stability, allowing the canoe to navigate the open ocean and withstand significant wave action.

The construction of a Manand was a complex and time-consuming process, requiring skilled craftsmen and community effort. The hull was carefully shaped and hollowed out, and the outriggers were attached using strong ropes made from coir. Sails, usually made from woven matting, were used for propulsion, though paddling was also common. The size and design of a Manand varied depending on its intended purpose and the resources available in a particular region of Fiji. These canoes played a significant role in Fijian culture, facilitating inter-island trade and communication, and were often featured in traditional ceremonies and oral histories. While modern materials and technologies have largely replaced them, the Manand remains an important symbol of Fijian heritage and maritime ingenuity.
