MallampatiScore
The Mallampati Score, also known as the Mallampati Classification, is a clinical tool used by healthcare professionals to assess the ease of intubation and predict potential airway management difficulties. It was introduced by Dr. Samuel Mallampati in 1985 and remains a standard part of preoperative airway evaluation.
The scoring system involves a visual examination of the oral cavity. The patient is asked to sit
- Class I: The soft palate, fauces, uvula, and tonsillar pillars are fully visible.
- Class II: The soft palate, fauces, and uvula are visible, but the tonsillar pillars are not.
- Class III: Only the soft palate and base of the uvula are visible.
- Class IV: Only the hard palate is visible.
These classifications help in predicting airway patency and the potential difficulty in procedures such as intubation.
While widely used, the Mallampati Score has limitations, including variability between observers and dependence on patient
