Maleus

In ancient Rome, the maleus was a type of Roman hammer, often used by artisans and craftsmen. These hammers varied in size and design depending on their intended use, from small woodworking tools to larger implements for stonemasonry. More commonly, maleus refers to the malleus, one of the three ossicles in the human middle ear. The malleus, meaning "hammer" in Latin, is the smallest bone in the body. It is attached to the eardrum and transmits sound vibrations to the incus, another ossicle, and then to the stapes, ultimately relaying the sound to the inner ear. Its shape is often compared to that of a hammer. Medical literature and anatomical studies frequently use the term malleus in this context.

The term might also appear in archaic or specialized agricultural contexts, referring to a type of flail or threshing tool, used for separating grain from chaff. This usage is less common in modern discourse but can be found in historical agricultural texts.
