Malebonding is a term used in sociology and gender studies to describe the formation and maintenance of social ties among men. It encompasses bonds formed through shared interests, activities, and mutual support, as well as through competition, humor, and status signaling. The concept is often discussed in relation to masculine identities and social norms.

Contexts and mechanisms: Malebonding occurs in a wide range of settings, including sports teams, military units, workplaces, fraternities, and informal friend groups. Bonding typically develops through shared routines, rites of passage, mentoring, and banter. Communication styles may emphasize directness, humor, and competitive framing, which can strengthen cohesion but also gatekeep participation.

Positive and negative aspects: On the positive side, malebonding can provide social support, stress relief, cooperation, and a sense of belonging. It can also facilitate collective action and resilience in difficult environments. On the downside, it can reinforce rigid gender norms, exclude outsiders, enable hazing or harassment, and pressure individuals to conform to harmful behaviors or risk-taking.

Variability and critique: Researchers note substantial cultural and historical variation in malebonding practices. In some contexts, bonding strengthens solidarity while remaining inclusive; in others, it aligns with toxic masculinity and exclusive group dynamics.
