Malabszorcióhoz refers to a state of impaired or incomplete absorption of nutrients from the digestive tract. This condition can affect the absorption of various substances, including carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, and minerals. When the body cannot properly absorb these essential nutrients, it can lead to a wide range of health problems.

The causes of malabsorption are diverse. They can include damage to the intestinal lining, such as that seen in celiac disease or inflammatory bowel disease like Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Infections in the small intestine, such as giardiasis, can also impair nutrient absorption. Surgical removal or alteration of parts of the digestive system, such as gastric bypass surgery or resection of the small intestine, can also result in malabsorption. Certain medications can interfere with nutrient absorption, and genetic disorders like cystic fibrosis can affect the pancreas's ability to produce digestive enzymes. Lactose intolerance, a common form of malabsorption, occurs when the body cannot digest lactose, a sugar found in milk.

Symptoms of malabsorption can vary depending on the specific nutrients that are not being absorbed and the severity of the condition. Common signs include chronic diarrhea, steatorrhea (fatty, greasy stools), abdominal bloating and gas, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, and deficiencies in specific vitamins or minerals, which can manifest as anemia, bone pain, or neurological issues. Diagnosis typically involves a combination of medical history, physical examination, stool tests, blood tests to check for nutrient deficiencies, and sometimes imaging studies or intestinal biopsies. Treatment focuses on addressing the underlying cause, dietary modifications, and nutritional supplementation.
